There are four elements or steps on how to write a business continuity plan, which includes:

The steps to create a scope and plan are the first steps to create a business continuity plan. The thing to do is to make the scope and other elements needed to determine the parameters of the plan. Scope-making activities include making the details of the work needed, making a list of resources to be used, and establishing management practices that will be carried out.

2.  Business Impact Assessment (BIA)

Business Impact Assessment helps business units understand the effects of disasters. This stage includes the implementation of risk analysis and determining the impact on the company if the potential loss identified by the risk analysis occurs.

The purpose of the Business Impact Assessment is to create a document that will be used to help understand the impact of a disaster on a company’s business processes. Impacts can be financial (quantitative) or operational (qualitative).

3.  The actual business continuity plan

This stage uses information obtained in the Business Impact Assessment process to develop an actual business continuity plan template. The development process includes the implementation plan, the testing plan, and the maintenance of the plan being carried out. This stage also determines alternative business recovery operations strategies for business recovery and IT capabilities within a specified recovery period.

4.   Approval and Implementation

This process consists of getting final approval from senior management, preparing a corporate awareness program and implementing maintenance procedures to update the plan as needed.

The final stage of filling out the business continuity plan is its implementation. Planning must contain a sequence in its implementation. Implementation refers to the following stages:

  • Approval by senior management
  • Creating care and skills
  • Maintain plans, including updating if necessary
